Danny Rolph

54 by 40 inches giclee print on Hanhemuhle Rag 2008 For Rolph, all visual material is fair game for painting, so in a shallow picture plane he crams in as much information as is possible, weaving diverse visual languages into some kind of wholeness. Hard angular structures jostle with pools of delicate colour. Collaged elements are bound into the whole with sinuous inky brush strokes. The supports for Rolph's paintings change too; sometimes he opts for a conventional canvas, on other occasions for stacked twinwall plastic boards where he works the paint on all six available surfaces before the sheets are put together. Danny Rolph lives and works in London. He studied MA painting at the Royal College of Art, London (1991-93) He was awarded the Delfina Trust Award (1998) and the Abbey Scholar, British School in Rome, Italy (1998). Rolph has recently had solo shows at A.R Contemporary, Milan, (2005), Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall (2005) and Chapter, Cardiff (2002). His work has also been included in group shows around the world including 'Hinterland', Barbara Davis Gallery, Houston, USA (2006), 'Cold Climate', Living Arts Museum, Reykjavik, Iceland (2006) and 'Collage', Bloomberg Gallery, London (2004).
